RIOBAIG SHONAIS, VI 173, a straggling long hair growing on a woman’s chin is called by some riobag shonais, hair of good fortune. By others the same is called riobag chonais, hair of quarrelsomeness. Cha robh bus lom sona riamh, [a bare face was never happy]. See Ribeag, 66.
RIBEAG, 66, Ribeagan clòmhaidh, a small lock of wool. Gus an téid e na ribeagan ’s ’na ròinneagan, till it goes in shreds. See Riobag shonais, VI 173.
Dwelly has ribeag and riobag for hair, little hair.
Riobag shonais/chonais was noted as late as 1987-8 in Lochcarnan, South Uist, but its definition looks suspiciously close to Fr Allan’s.
